Abstract (English): The educational reforms implemented in Mexico in the early 1990's implied "new management" for public schools, including the opportunity for democratic participation, collegiate work, and school projects defined by the involved agents. This article presents the ethnographic reconstruction of school management through a case study. The approach allows us to understand how management is linked to historically constructed roles and materializes in positions, territories, and myths that school agents put into play in their daily actions. Thus the image of a "successful school" is updated to a "school of competitive quality". The underlying dynamics are motivated by hierarchical guidelines of regulation, by affinities with external proposals, and by the self-regulation produced in measures aimed at being "the best school".
