Abstract (English): The educational reforms implemented in Mexico in the early 1990's implied "new management" for public schools, including the opportunity for democratic participation, collegiate work, and school projects defined by the involved agents. This article presents the ethnographic reconstruction of school management through a case study. The approach allows us to understand how management is linked to historically constructed roles and materializes in positions, territories, and myths that school agents put into play in their daily actions. Thus the image of a "successful school" is updated to a "school of competitive quality". The underlying dynamics are motivated by hierarchical guidelines of regulation, by affinities with external proposals, and by the self-regulation produced in measures aimed at being "the best school". Abstract (Spanish): La reforma educativa impulsada en México a principios de los años noventa implicaba, entre otros aspectos, una "nueva gestión" para la escuela pública que comprendía la oportunidad de la participación democrática, el trabajo colegiado y la concreción de proyectos de escuela definidos en cada una por los agentes involucrados. En este trabajo se presenta la reconstrucción etnográfica de la gestión escolar a través de un caso. Nos permite comprender cómo se articulan a las apuestas construidas históricamente y se materializan en posiciones, territorios y mitos, disposiciones que los agentes escolares ponen en juego en su acción cotidiana. Así, la imagen de "escuela exitosa" es actualizada en el emblema de la "escuela de calidad competitiva" y la dinámica que la hace posible es animada a través de pautas jerárquicas de regulación, por las afinidades con las propuestas externas y la autorregulación que se produce en las disposiciones a estar y ser "la mejor escuela".
