Abstract: Chapter 1 of the "Handbook of College Science Teaching" is presented. It focuses on research done on science anxiety and actions that college science teachers can take to build the confidence of their students. According to the author, he identified the phenomenon in 1977, for which he coined the term science anxiety. Instrument and analysis, the role of gender and nationality, and the role of science courses are discussed. A copy of the Science Anxiety Questionnaire is presented.
