| Abstract: |
The article discusses the benefits of service learning programs. The author discusses how service learning, an experiential learning method in which students help deal with community issues, can improve school and community interaction. Teacher Barry Guillot uses service learning to teach environmentalism by having his students mentor younger students, a model which will be adopted by other schools through a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service. The U.S. National and Community Service Act allocated funding for service learning programs. The adoption of service learning standards and professional development services for service learning are noted. U.S. President Barack Obama has offered support to U.S. public service programs. INSET: K-12 Service Learning Standards for Quality Practice. |
