The article presents a study which investigates the extent of sociolinguistic and extralinguistics factors to measure the differences of every person in first language (L1) proficiency. The study gathered the data from attriting people whose L1 is German in which one is in Dutch language context and the other is in the context of Canadian English. Results of the study indicate that several factor groups that have been regarded as the most significant for L1 attrition or maintenance process include recognition and association with L1, exposure to German language, the attitude of the people towards L1. Results of the study also show that the power of factor groups in the study to predict individual differences is weak. |
