| Abstract: | The article presents a study that investigates the efficiency of measurement of learning objectives based upon tests over these objectives as provided by authors of six principles of economics texts. More specifically, the study evaluates the level of learning expressed in the stated objective of textbooks, the level of learning that is measured by the accompanying instructor's manual and the degree to which the latter measures the former. For the purpose of this study, the levels of learning will be identified using B.S. Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational Objectives. Well-stated objectives are essential for any efficient learning experience. Objectives give direction to the course content, guidance in text selection, continuity to curricula, and purpose to the student. Once the hierarchy of educational objectives has been established for a course, it is very important that testing devices be employed to assure that student achievement is measured in terms of the same hierarchy. This study indicates the need for greater care in the selection of textbooks based on the adequacy of the text's learning objectives and the supportive value and compatibility of the instructor's manual. Professors should be like the efficient managers theorized about--responsible for results. |
