Abstract:	The article discusses the history of the U.S. interstate highway system known as the Dwight D. Eisenhower National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, authorized by U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. It examines the role of Thomas H. MacDonald, head of the U.S. Federal Bureau of Public Roads, in the standardization of highways. The author considers the impact of the construction of highways, noting that they led to economic growth and fostered suburbanization. The views of anti-interstate groups and their concerns over noise, environmental issues, and the destruction of neighborhoods are also considered.
