Abstract: In this article the author discusses the practice of basing student grades off of averages. The topic is discussed in light of grading reform at Minnetonka High School in Minnetonka, Minnesota, which the author suggests led to a change in the way teachers and students approach learning. He addresses the act of grade inflation by allowing non-academic aspects of student activities, such as returning permission slips, to be reflected in students' grades. Other topics include grade deflation, grading on the curve, and the impact of student behavior and school attendance on grades.
