| Abstract: |
The article discusses creating a classroom library in type II alternative schools, where teachers are more focused on at risk students' behavior modification than academics. One alternative school from grades three through 12 is described, where students go when they have been expelled from their home district school or have been through juvenile court. The author describes applying for grants to fund the class library, designing the library, and asking students about their reading interests. Students were involved in creating rules for the library, cataloging the books, and suggesting young adult books to buy. Teacher and teen public librarian collaboration is recommended, and the author mentions a connection between reading and academic achievement. |
