Abstract: The author argues that the 2012 U.S. Common Core State Standards for mathematics and reading education could improve educational quality and equality, especially for elementary math. Research into student math achievement and the 2008 survey Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) are discussed, as well as curriculum development and the eighth grade assessment test National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).
