| Abstract: | A variety of computer-based models of Extensive Reading have emerged in the last decade. Different Information and Communication Technologies online usually support these models. However, such innovations are not feasible in contexts where the digital breach limits the access to Internet. The purpose of this paper is to report a project in which the authors developed an in-house software prototype to allow students from a limited resources high school in a developing country to do extensive reading in a computer without Internet connection. Special emphasis is placed on the pedagogical and cognitive aspect of software design. The process was based on the systemic quality approach to educational software design (Díaz-Anton et al., 2002, 2003). Implications for different educational contexts are drawn from the experience. In-house teacher-produced software may be a more adequate alternative for implementing extensive reading since the developers have more control on certain options and are not restricted by issues of Internet access.
