| Abstract: | This article reports on Flir Systems, a maker of infrared imaging devices, and Earl Lewis, the man who agreed to be paid entirely in the company's stock, which was nearly worthless when he signed on as chief executive in 2000. Five years later, revenues at Flir have nearly tripled. Flir makes cameras that use infrared sensors to see objects from the heat they generate. Soldiers in Iraq use them to peer through smoke and darkness to spot the enemy up to six miles away. A smaller Flir division makes thermographic cameras that measure temperature, detecting gas leaks at refineries, water damage inside walls and potential hot spots in tiny integrated circuits.
