The academic and professional preparation of elementary, secondary, and college teachers of English is discussed, and recommendations for strengthening the teaching profession are presented. Specific topics of discussion are (1) teacher roles and personal characteristics, (2) the recruitment, selection, certification, and assignment of English teachers, (3) illustrative language arts programs for the elementary and secondary schools, (4) the aims and activities of inservice programs for improving instruction, and (5) the nature and value of follow-up studies of English teachers on the job.
