| Abstract: | The forecast reported here surveys expected utilization levels, organizational structures, and values concerning technology in education in 1990. The focus is upon educational technology and forecasting methodology; televised instruction, computer-assisted instruction (CAI), and information services are considered. The methodology employed involved: 1) asking experts to predict levels of technological utilization and their impacts upon structures and values; 2) providing feedback to them; and 3) obtaining revised estimates. The seven chapters introduce the subject, analyze forecasting methods, review previous studies, define terms, describe the design and execution of this forecast, present results, and critique the methodology used. Some major findings reported indicate that cable television will be widely available and used, that televised instruction will be common, and that CAI will be moderately widespread. Public control and financing of delivery systems will prevail and software will be available through national organizations. Also, technology will be used in coordination with teachers who will become learning managers and resource persons. Finally, education will become capital-intensive and will require cost-effectiveness. (Author/LB) |
