Abstract: This manual was prepared by experienced wastewater collection system workers to provide a home study course to develop new qualified workers and expand the abilities of existing workers. This volume emphasizes material needed by intermediate-level operators and stresses the operation and maintenance of conventional treatment plants. This volume also contains information for supervisors and managers. Nine chapters examine the following topics: (1) activated sludge, (2) sludge digestion and solids handling, (3) effluent disposal, (4) plant safety, (5) maintenance, (6) laboratory procedures and chemistry, (7) basic arithmetic, (8) analysis and presentation of data, and (9) records and report writing. Each lesson contains discussion and review questions and is completed with an objective test. (Author/CO)
