An introductory section discusses the aim of developing language competence and recent theory on competence. The role of language as an instrument of communication and as a vehicle for sociocultural values is outlined. Subsequent sections present background information and specific notional content for instruction in oral production and aural comprehension, reading, and writing for each of six years' curricula.
