| Abstract: | The integration of existing applications in hypermedia environments is a promising approach towards more flexible and user-friendly hypermedia learning materials. A hypermedia courseware editor, called HyDE (Hypermedia Document Editor) was developed using Microsoft Windows TM OLE technology. OLE (object Linking and Embedding) stands for an extensible protocol that enables one application to use the services of others applications. HyDE acts as an OLE client capable of receiving OLE data from several commercial OLE servers. The role of hypermedia documents in distance learning is twofold: a hypermedia document may contain a pre-prepared lesson which can be downloaded in students' workstations, and it may contain self-study material. HyDE provides for the possibility to attach lists of keywords to HyDE lessons, as well as to individual OLE files particularly suitable for constructing templates of multimedia objects; objects can be easily transferred from one document to another by the "cut, copy and paste" facilities of the MS Windows clipboard. Currently all OLE servers are single user applications. In general, hypermedia learning material appears useful because it allows fast preparation of courseware that is flexible for modification.
