Abstract: This information brief explains the State of Minnesota statutory provisions that affect the employment rights of K-12 public school teachers in Minnesota. It describes the required probationary period, the conditions of continuing employment for those teachers who successfully complete the probationary period, and the procedures that must be followed when terminating, discharging, or placing those teachers on unrequested leaves of absence. The statutory provisions differ for teachers in non-first class city schools and first class city schools (Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Duluth); these statutory provisions are listed in a chart at the end of the brief.
