| Abstract: | This volume is the third annual Texas Public Library Summary. It contains information as submitted by local public libraries on their 1995 Annual Report forms. The contents include: analytical tables; statistical summary overview; income and percent of population served by type of library; operating expenditures adjusted for inflation; materials expenditures adjusted for inflation; Texas library per capita data compared to U.S. averages; salary and staffing data; and rank order of Texas public libraries by population served. Results show modest increases in expenditures overall and in salaries, although library spent less on library materials than in 1994. Library income increased 6.5% over 1994. Libraries added 174 new paid staff positions in 1995, of which 75 (43%) were MLS positions. Nearly all measures of library service showed declines from 1994 to 1995. Circulation and visits dropped slightly, while reference transactions decreased by nearly 10%. The number of book items per capita held in Texas public libraries remained flat while total items per capita rebounded a 1994 decrease to return to approximately the same level as 1993. While spending has increased in Texas public libraries since 1985, the increases have not kept pace with inflation. (SWC) |
