| Abstract: | This booklet presents the youth development approach to supporting adolescents in dealing with all the issues they face, including preventing unintended pregnancies. The Department of Health and Human Services promotes five principles that research and experience suggest are key to community efforts to prevent teen pregnancy: (1) parental and adult involvement; (2) abstinence; (3) clear strategies for the future; (4) community involvement; and (5) sustained commitment. Chapter 1 provides an overview of adolescent pregnancy prevention. Chapter 2, "The Abstinence versus Education Debate," discusses the sexuality education paradigm that underpins many existing adolescent pregnancy prevention programs. Chapter 3, "Pregnancy Prevention from the Youth Development Perspective," describes the Family and Youth Services Bureau's youth development approach to pregnancy prevention as implemented by the Bureau's Transitional Living Program grantees; chapter 4, "Ideas for Getting Started," offers suggestions that communities can use to start creating a more comprehensive framework for supporting youth and preventing adolescent pregnancy. Chapter 5, "Building on Lessons Learned," offers some concluding remarks. The booklet includes a 26-item bibliography and a list of resource organizations. (Contains 20 references.) (SLD) |
