| Abstract: | This document contains amendments to the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) that establish guidelines for state and local government facilities and building elements designed for children's use. The amendments change several sections of ADAAG and add new sections that cover access to judicial, legislative, and regulatory facilities and to detention and correctional facilities, and provide alternate specifications based on children's dimensions for various building elements such as water closets and lavatories. The Department of Justice has not yet adopted these amendments as part of the enforceable standard under the Americans with Disabilities Act. This document incorporates these new amendments into the existing ADAAG. ADAAG provisions are shown on the left hand pages with the new amendments incorporated. The right hand pages how the new amendments change ADAAG and indicate what is enforceable by the Department of Justice. Material which had been added to ADAAG but has not yet been added to the enforceable standard by the Department of Justice is shown in shaded text. Material which has been deleted from ADAAG but has not yet been deleted from the enforceable standard by the Department of Justice is shown in strike out text. (CR) |
