Abstract: This report describes the status of academic libraries in 1996, based on results of the 1996 Academic Library Survey, a part of the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) of the National Center for Education Statistics. The report presents detailed tabulations for 1996 and historical comparisons with previous years. Topics covered include: (1) number and diversity of academic libraries, including historical growth and branch libraries; (2) services, including electronic services, circulation, reference transactions, hours of service, presentations, interlibrary loans, and visits to the library; (3) collections, including change in volumes held/added, distribution of volumes of books and bound serials by type of institution, differences in volumes per FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) student, and number of volumes per institution and academic library standards; (4) staff, including distribution of FTE library staff by type, FTE staff per 1,000 FTE students, change in staff since 1974, changes in staff relative to total institution staff and students; and (5) expenditures, including distribution of library operating expenditures, distribution of information resource expenditures, changes in operating expenditures, and operating expenditures as a percentage of total education and general expenditures. The appendices include the methodology, detailed tables, academic library indicators, and the survey questionnaire. (Contains 46 references.) (MES)
