| Abstract: | The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), which became operational in 1975, contains data on a census of fatal traffic crashes within the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The General Estimates System (GES), which began in 1988, provides data from a nationally representative probability sample selected from all police-reported crashes resulting in property damage, injury, or death. This document compiles several statistical exhibits detailing data from these two sources. Exhibits include the following: (1) 2001 traffic fatalities by state and percent change from 2002; (2) fatality and injury rates per population and vehicle miles traveled, 1991-2001; (3) fatalities in school bus-related crashes; (4) pedestrians killed, 14 years and older, by blood alcohol concentration, 1982-2001; (5) vehicle occupants killed or injured, by age and vehicle type, 2001; (6) passenger car, light truck, and large truck occupants killed or injured, by age and restraint use; (7) restraint use by children under 5 years old, 2000; and (8) lives saved by restraint use, air bags, and 21-year-old minimum legal drinking age laws and potential lives saved at 100 percent safety belt and motorcycle helmet use, 1975-2000.
