Abstract: The decline in undergraduate enrollment at American colleges and universities, particularly highlighted by a drop of nearly 500,000 students in Fall 2021, continues to reflect broader challenges facing higher education. Factors contributing to this trend include the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic instability, shifting demographics, and evolving perceptions of the value of higher education. This study explored the reasons behind premature disenrollment within the context of increasing student debt and rising tuition costs. It identified strategies to re-engage students in higher education while emphasizing affordability, accessibility, and innovative educational approaches. The findings underscore the need for institutions to adapt changing student needs and preferences, thereby addressing both the challenges and opportunities posed by declining enrollment. Future research is recommended to investigate the implications of decreasing college enrollment on educational outcomes and economic prospects.
