Abstract: In recent years, wildfires have caused significant disruptions to teaching and learning, including destruction, damage, injuries, and extended school and campus closures. The 2023 National Preparedness Report notes regions across the United States experience more intense and hotter wildfires because of climate change and prolonged drought. Wildfires have always posed significant dangers for communities in the Wildland-Urban Interface (lands prone to wildland fires due to conditions such as the amount and type of vegetation). However, rising temperatures and strong winds are increasing K-12 school and institutions of higher education (IHEs) wildfire vulnerability. Developing an emergency operations plan (EOP) prepares schools and IHEs for all hazards and threats, including the natural hazard of wildfires. This fact sheet focuses on how schools, school districts, and IHEs can address wildfires by creating a Wildfire Annex in their EOP. It also provides emergency management planning considerations that aim to keep the school/campus community safe.
