| Abstract: | Raising children can be particularly difficult for young parents, who must balance caring for their children with the demands of going to school, training for a career and working to support their families--often without adequate support. This population of over 3 million undergraduates with kids must navigate substantial barriers while striving for a better future. In 2019, the Annie E. Casey Foundation launched the Expanding Opportunities for Young Families (EOYF) initiative to better understand how to support young parents as they pursue jobs or education. Child Trends is a research organization focused on improving the lives of children, youth, and families which managed EOYF, including overseeing the implementation of the pilot programs across sites, facilitating peer learning, and documenting learning from the work. This brief highlights specific lessons from the pilot program, including the critical need for institutions to engage with parenting students, offer clear pathways to academic success, develop flexible approaches to help students balance parenting and school, make campuses more family friendly and support parenting students' basic needs. Recommendations for changes in state and federal policies that can produce better outcomes for parenting students are provided. |
