Abstract: A community impact study was conducted in the suburbs surrounding a large multicampus Australian university to explore community perspectives on student housing. A mixed methods approach was used to explore current perceptions and beliefs in the community about off-campus student housing. This consisted of a survey of community members and students (N = 263) and six focus groups with members of the local community (N = 49). Topics explored through the study included registration standards for student accommodation, responsibilities of stakeholders, relationships with international students, and identified concerns and enablers for the future. Both data sources (survey and focus groups) provided evidence of concerns about poorly maintained rental properties occupied by students, as well as problems related to disturbances of the peace. Respondents suggested that landlords needed to be more accountable for the maintenance of their property and suggested that off-campus housing must be registered. This study confirms themes identified by previous studies on community perceptions of student housing and offers new findings that offer innovative solutions to existing issues in Australia and beyond. Some community members suggested that overcrowding may not be caused by the students but is rather a larger problem of the rising cost of rental accommodation across the board.
