Abstract: It is important to engage students in lecture and assessment with new media while helping them build new media literacy skills. The blog and podcast are two forms of new media being widely used by organizations, businesses, and corporations that students also appreciate in the learning environment. The following unit activity asks students to work in a cross-functional team to create a branded blog and podcast effectively, learning new media literacy skills and gaining team skills along the way. Outcomes: By the end of the unit, students should be able to (1) explain the purpose of using blogs and podcasts as a communication strategy in organizational/corporate messaging, (2) examine current blog and podcast trends to discuss and apply in cross-functional teamwork, (3) compose three blog posts that communicate clear branding and a consistent theme for a current business, (4) create podcast episodes that communicate clear branding and a consistent theme for a current business, and (5) successfully work with a cross-functional team to complete a project.
