Abstract: Despite Portugal's peripheral position in Europe, the Enlightenment successfully introduced Natural History into public education. The inclusion of geology at the University of Coimbra laid the foundation for its integration into secondary schools. Following the Liberal Revolution of 1820, the need to educate the Portuguese population grew, supporting efforts to modernise the country. A decisive step was taken in 1836 with the creation of a national plan for secondary education. From the outset, practical science teaching was emphasised, leading to the establishment of school cabinets and museums. The study of minerals and rocks was incorporated into early secondary curricula, creating a demand for teaching collections. The Geological Survey of Portugal played a crucial role in supplying schools with geological specimens from duplicates of the Geological Museum's collections. A notable example is Dr Joaquim de Carvalho Secondary School in Figueira da Foz (west Portugal), which still houses mineral and rock specimens with their original labels. These collections link to fieldwork for Portugal's first geological map (1:500,000 scale) and early studies in national mineralogy and petrology. Serving pedagogical purposes for decades, they retain significant scientific and historiographical value, bearing witness to the history of Earth sciences in Portuguese secondary education.
