| Abstract: | Sex education remains a controversial topic in many parts of the world, including India. This study aimed to assess the relationship between the perception of teachers and students regarding the implementation of sex education in schools in the state of Kerala, India. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 500 teachers and 1500 students from 25 randomly selected schools. Questionnaires were used to collect data on socio-demographics, knowledge, attitude, and perception towards sex education. Chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses were performed to examine the associations. The majority of teachers (78.6%) and students (69.4%) had a positive perception of sex education. However, a significant difference was observed between the perceptions of teachers and students (p<0.001). Factors associated with a positive perception among teachers included being female, having higher education, and teaching science subjects. Among students, factors such as being female, studying in higher grades, and having educated parents were associated with a positive perception. The findings highlight the need for comprehensive sex education programs in schools, with the active involvement of teachers and parents, to promote the sexual and reproductive health of adolescents. |
