| Abstract: | This study involved an integrative literature review of successful empathy training methods in higher education to provide a compressive understanding of effective empathy training strategies for human-computer interaction (HCI). The initial keyword search using six online databases found 1,384 articles published from January 2010 to July 2020, and 16 studies met the inclusion criteria. Four types of intervention emerged as effective in fostering empathy across disciplines: reflective projects, scenario-based learning, hands-on practices, and multi-media storytelling. This study categorised the significant impacts of interventions into four themes: looking into one's own empathic mindset, walking into real-world issues, practising better communication, and inspiring prosocial motivation. All of these themes effectively amplified cognitive and affective empathy, with successful cases of empathy-focused content. Based on the findings, this review offers pedagogical implications for HCI education. |
