Abstract: Digital tools are being introduced or developed for use in geoscience to improve the traditional process of field surveys and perform tasks that were previously considered difficult. Based on this need, the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) has developed and distributed KMapper (KIGAM field Mapper), a digital tool for field surveys. This system integrates geological survey and GIS data editing functions, including measurement tools designed specifically for geoscience fieldwork. Technical feedback from users in various fields has indicated that the level of utilization of digital tools varies according to the digital competence of the users, and there is a need to improve utilization by enhancing the digital competence required for field surveys. This paper defines the work stages in field surveys through cases of successful application of KMapper, and derives a digital competence framework for each stage. Furthermore, it discusses strategies to improve digital competence, there by enabling users to develop and improve effectively the skills needed for digital fieldwork. This paper is expected to help researchers to effectively develop and improve the necessary digital competencies by suggesting ways to improve these skills through various cases of field research using the digital tool.
