Abstract: Develops an instrument based on earthquake-related deaths to provide an exogenous measure of media coverage. Finds that more U.S. network news coverage increased aggregate donations by private citizens; but that the amount of such coverage was not associated with government assistance or international aid, although these forms of aid were highly correlated with other measures of severity.
