Abstract (English):	Nowadays, Mexico is considered a country of young people; nonetheless, it presents a process of moderate ageing in its population that will bring medium and long term consequences in aspects such as health, economy, social relations and cultural values; resulting in an increasingly complex and diverse problems that will require society's intervention as a whole and in particular from the Estate. A historical revision on the attention to old age in Mexico shows that it was until the seventies that the country had a public policy on old age. However, demographic projections and the pressure of some groups managed to put the issue in the Government's Agenda, which resulted with the creation of the Instituto Nacional de la Senectud. The first actions of the Institute for Old Age had as guidance the idea of assistance to the elderly from a perspective of poverty and social integration, with the time, this idea has turned into a perspective that considers old people as holders of rights. In order to implement the public policies from this new perspective, we require structural institutional actions, proactive rather than reactive, that consider all of the social actors interested on the subject and lay the foundations to face the problem in a not so distant future. Abstract (Spanish):	En la actualidad México se considera un país de jóvenes, sin embargo presenta un proceso de envejecimiento moderado de su población que acarreará, a mediano y largo plazo, consecuencias en aspectos como la salud, la economía, las relaciones sociales y los valores culturales; ocasionando problemas cada vez más diversos y complejos que requerirán la intervención de la sociedad en su conjunto y del Estado en particular. Una revisión histórica sobre la atención a la vejez en México nos muestra que hasta antes de la década de los setenta el país carecía de una política pública de vejez. Sin embargo, las proyecciones demográficas y la presión de algunos grupos lograron poner el tema en la Agenda de Gobierno, que respondió con la creación del Instituto Nacional de la Senectud. Las primeras acciones del Ins-tituto tuvieron como guía la idea de la asistencia a los ancianos desde un enfoque de pobreza e integración social, poco a poco, esta perspectiva ha ido transitando hacia un enfoque que considera a las personas adultas mayores como sujetos de derechos. Para poder implementar políticas públicas desde este nuevo enfoque se requieren acciones institucionales estructurales y proactivas más que reactivas, que tomen en cuenta a todos los actores sociales interesados en el tema y que coloquen los cimientos para hacer frente al problema en un futuro no muy lejano.
