Abstract (English): Background: Superficial radiotherapy has been used with therapeutic purposes in Dermatology since the mid-twentieth century. Its main use has been in cutaneous Oncology. However, the practice has fallen into disuse for various reasons. Objectives: To report the experience in the last three decades of using superficial radiotherapy in our dermatology department, and to describe some clinical and epidemiological characteristics of treated patients. Material and method: A retrospective, observational, analytical and descriptive study was performed. Records of patients treated with superficial radiotherapy in the last thirty years of using this therapy were analyzed. Results: During the studied period 1,645 cases were treated. The gender distribution was higher for women in a relation of 1.8:1. The average age was 55.5 years. The most frequent diagnoses were: basal cell carcinoma (57%), keloids (27%) and squamous cell carcinoma (7%). The nose was the most common topography. Dermopan II® was the most used equipment, and the dose was 4,500 total accumulated rads. Conclusion: The use of superficial radiotherapy, as shown by our experience, proved to be a good tool for the treatment of several entities, predominantly in those diagnosed as a malignant tumor. However, its use was discontinued due to unfavorable conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Abstract (Spanish): Antecedentes: la radioterapia superficial ha sido un recurso terapéutico utilizado en Dermatología desde mediados del siglo XX. Su principal utilidad es en el área de la Oncología cutánea. A pesar de ello, su práctica ha caído en desuso por diferentes razones. Objetivos: comunicar la experiencia adquirida durante las últimas tres décadas en la aplicación de radioterapia superficial en el Servicio de Dermatología del Hospital General de México. Describir algunas características clínicas y epidemiológicas de los pacientes tratados. Material y método: estudio retrospectivo, observacional, analítico y descriptivo. Se analizaron todos los registros de pacientes tratados con radioterapia superficial en los últimos 30 años. Resultados: en el periodo analizado se trataron 1,645 pacientes. La distribución por género fue mayor para las mujeres en relación 1.8:1. La edad media fue de 55.5 años. Los diagnósticos más frecuentes fueron: carcinoma basocelular (57%), queloides (27%) y carcinoma epidermoide (7%). La topografía más afectada fue la nariz. El equipo más utilizado fue Dermopan II® y la dosis total acumulada más indicada fue de 4,500 rads. Conclusión: la experiencia en la aplicación de radioterapia superficial mostró que es una buena herramienta para el tratamiento de diferentes casos, con predominio de lesiones de estirpe tumoral maligna.
