| Abstract (English): |
Objective: To compare the efficacy of palonosetron vs. ondansetron/metoclopramide for postoperative nausea and vomiting induced by epidural morphine in female patients subjected to an hysterectomy. Material and methods: A controlled, longitudinal, prospective, comparative, randomized, double blind clinical trial was carried out in 80 patients (40 per group) programmed for abdominal or vaginal hysterectomy. Nausea and vomiting was investigated at one, two, 12 and 24 hours postoperative, and the level of pain using the visual analogue scale. Results: Nausea was present in 10% of the patients treated with palonosetron at 12 hours and in patients treated with ondansetron/metoclopramide at different intervals with a incidence 2.5%. Vomiting was observed in the palonosetron group in 10% at 12 hours and in 2.5% during recovery in the ondansetron/metoclopramide group. However, no significant difference was observed (p>0.05). Conclusions: The superiority of palonosetron over ondansetron/metoclopramide for prophylaxis of nausea and vomiting secondary to epidural morphine was not found. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
