Abstract (English): The north fringe of heavy crude represents the main source of Cuban hydrocarbons. Gas and oil seals of Cuban Northern Province are represented by a series of orogenic formations consisting mainly of terrigenous rocks with clay components. For seal quality evaluation of these formations, petrography and mineralogical characterization are essential. The primary sealing elements of Cuban northern province are clays, which are defined as the fundamental object of this research. They are distinguished by having a lower crystallinity than carbonates, effect that is caused by crystal imperfections: crystallite size, structural disorder and stress, while carbonates have a chemical composition that includes a smaller number of chemicals that showing clays. For this characterisation it was applied the infrared spectroscopy and x ray diffraction techniques. For this purpose samples were taken from clays and carbonate rocks of drill cores and geological outcrops. The application of these techniques allowed the determination of the composition of the rocks, characterized by the complex mixture of: illite, smectite, chlorite and hydromica (hydromuscovite) accompanied by their respective interlayereds. Abstract (Spanish): La franja norte de crudos pesados representa la fuente principal de hidrocarburos cubanos. Las secuencias sellantes de la provincia gasopetrolífera norte cubana están representadas por un conjunto de formaciones orogénicas compuestas por rocas terrígenas con componentes arcillosos. Para la evaluación de la calidad de dichas formaciones como sellos, resulta imprescindible caracterizar desde el punto de vista mineralógico las rocas. El componente sellante en la franja norte de crudos lo constituyen las arcillas y son el objeto fundamental de la investigación, las cuales se distinguen por presentar una cristalinidad inferior a la de los carbonatos, tal efecto lo provocan las imperfecciones cristalinas: tamaño de cristalitas, desorden estructural y tensiones, mientras que los carbonatos presentan una composición química que incluye un número más reducido de elementos químicos que el que muestran las arcillas. En su caracterización, se aplicó la espectroscopía infrarroja y la difracción de rayos X. En la caracterización se obtuvieron grupos funcionales y fases cristalinas que determinan la naturaleza de los compuestos químicos. Con el mismo interés, se tomaron muestras pertenecientes a rocas arcillosas y carbonatadas de pozos como de superficie. Se logró determinar la composición de las rocas, que se distinguen por la mezcla compleja de: illita, esmectita, clorita e hidromica (hidromoscovita), a las cuales, las acompañan sus respectivos interestratificados.
