Introduction: It is difficult to adapt or generate new strategies for dengue control in rural areas, because of the dispersion of rural homes and the lack of knowledge of vector presence and behavior in these areas. Spatial data analysis could help to understand the temporal and spatial dynamics related to the transmission of vector-borne disease in rural areas and, thus, contribute to dengue prevention and control. Objective: Determine the likelihood of presence of the dengue vector, Aedes aegypti, in rural area of Anapoima and La Mesa municipalities, central Colombia. Materials and methods: A total of 102 houses were visited in the rural area, inspecting potential breeding sites of the Aedes aegypti and capturing adult forms inside these houses. The likelihood of the presence and absence of the vector in the study area was identified by indicator kriging, a spatial statistics interpolation technique. Results: The resulting prediction shows that the highest likelihood of presence of A. aegypti was close to urban centers in the central part of the study area. Conclusion: This study shows that analyses of spatio-temporal dynamics of disease vectors may be used in surveillance systems of vector-borne diseases, complementing currently used methods, and improving the identification of areas targeted for vector control interventions, thereby saving costs.
