Abstract (English): The article presents a guide of recommendations for the prevention of infections in elderly care homes. Experts and Spanish scientific societies were called upon to establish these recommendations, as specific recommendations for this type of care homes have not been found. The document includes measures to be implemented and ways to quantify the problems and the impact of the established measures. The importance of extreme hygiene measures, maintaining a closed drainage system, and avoiding prolonged use of urinary catheters is emphasized. It is also recommended to have written policies and procedures to prevent outbreaks of respiratory infections, as well as periodically evaluate the vaccination status of residents and workers. In addition, protocols are mentioned to prevent injuries to the skin and soft tissues, as well as measures to prevent and control gastrointestinal infections. The article also addresses outbreak management, prevention of ocular infections and conjunctivitis, and the importance of oral health in infection prevention. The collection of individual and institutional data is suggested to monitor and control infections. The document provides a list of references related to the prevention of infections in elderly care homes and long-term care facilities, including regulations, guidelines, and studies on infection prevention and control, vaccination, and management of infectious diseases in these settings. Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria in adults and the optimization of antibiotic prescribing in long-term care homes are also mentioned. The article focuses on various research and guidelines related to the prevention and management of infections in elderly care homes, including Clostridium difficile infection. Topics such as the transmission of Clostridium difficile in residents of long-term care facilities, the epidemiology and microbiology of Clostridium difficile colonization in elderly patients, and trends in the incidence of Clostridium difficile infections in long-term care facilities in different geographical locations in the United States are also addressed. Other topics related to antibiotic resistance and inappropriate antibiotic prescribing in care homes are mentioned as well. The article also highlights the importance of surveillance and knowledge of healthcare safety programs. The guide aims to provide guidelines for preventing infections in elderly care homes and has the collaboration of experts in preventive medicine, geriatrics, pharmacy, microbiology, and nursing, among others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
