Abstract (English): Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the preventive efficacy of dentin-bonding agent (DBA) against discoloration caused by different antibiotic pastes. Methodology: A total of 140 bovine teeth were accessed and its pulp tissues removed. After initial color spectrophotometer measurement, 60 teeth had DBA applied before insertion of the antibiotic pastes. Then, teeth were randomly allocated to the following 6 groups (n=20): TAP (Metronidazole, Ciprofloxacin and Minocycline), TAPM (Metronidazole, Ciprofloxacin and Amoxicillin), DAP (Metronidazole and Ciprofloxacin), DBA + TAP, DBA + TAPM, and DBA + DAP. Twenty teeth comprised the two control groups: one without any procedures and the other one with DBA application. Specimens were discolored with antibiotic pastes over a period of 4 weeks. Spectrophotometric readings were obtained on the buccal surfaces of the crown on day 1 to week 4 after filling, and the E value was calculated. Data were analyzed with ANOVA 2-way test and the Tukey post hoc test and t-test for independent samples (p =0.05). Results: The TAP group induced more coronal discoloration when compared to the other tested groups (p<0.05). The application of DBA decreased the E values only in the TAP group, after the first week (p<0.05); however, the darkening was still clinically perceptible. In the other groups, the application of DBA did not interfere in color variation in the different evaluated time-points (p> 0.05). Conclusions: The antibiotic paste containing minocycline caused the greatest coronal discoloration. Previous application of DBA did not contribute to the prevention of discoloration. Abstract (Portuguese): Objetivos: Avaliar a eficácia preventiva do adesivo dentinário (AD) contra descoloração causada por diferentes pastas antibióticas. Metodologia: 140 dentes bovinos foram acessados e seus tecidos pulpares foram removidos. Após a medição inicial do espectrofotômetro de cor, 60 dentes foram submetidos ao AD antes da inserção das pastas antibióticas. Em seguida, os dentes foram alocados aleatoriamente em seis grupos (n = 20): PTA (Metronidazol, Ciprofloxacina e Minociclina), PTAM (Metronidazol, Ciprofloxacina e Amoxicilina), PDA (Metronidazol e Ciprofloxacina), AD + PTA, AD + PTAM, e AD + PDA. Vinte dentes compuseram os dois grupos controle: um sem procedimentos e outro com aplicação de AD. As amostras foram descoloridas com pastas antibióticas durante um período de quatro semanas. As leituras espectrofotométricas foram obtidas nas superfícies vestibulares da coroa no dia 1 até 4 semanas após o preenchimento, e o valor de E foi calculado. Os dados foram analisados com os testes ANOVA de duas vias, Tukey post-hoc e teste t para amostras independentes (p = 0,05). Resultados: O grupo PTA induziu mais descoloração coronária quando comparado aos outros grupos testados (p < 0,05). A aplicação do AD diminuiu os valores de E apenas no grupo PTA, após a primeira semana (p < 0,05); no entanto, o escurecimento ainda foi clinicamente perceptível. Nos demais grupos, a aplicação do AD não interferiu na variação da cor nos diferentes momentos avaliados (p > 0,05).
