Abstract (English): Puberty is the period in which physical, hormonal, psychological and emotional changes occur that mark the difference between childhood and adulthood. Its onset depends on the interrelation of complex mechanisms with multiple levels of regulation that involve from the central nervous system to the gonads. The main events that occur during puberty are gonadarche and adrenarche, which determine the appearance and progression of secondary sexual characteristics. Sex steroids acting synergistically with growth hormone are responsible for the pubertal push. Puberty occurs due to the sequence of ordered events that present a different pattern in males and females. Knowledge about normal puberty and its variants will allow the Pediatrician to recognize signs of precocious puberty development. Early detection of the appearance of signs of precocious pubertal development and timely referral to a Pediatric Endocrinologist for management will benefit children who require some therapeutic intervention.
