Abstract (English): The article focuses on the evaluation of calcium intake in postmenopausal women receiving supplements in primary care. An observational study was conducted with 357 participants, where it was found that the average calcium intake through diet was 872 mg/day, which is below the recommended requirements of 1000-1200 mg/day. Additionally, it was identified that 27% of the women were taking supplements unnecessarily, as their diet already met their calcium needs, and low adherence to treatment was observed, with about half of the participants not correctly following the prescription. It is concluded that it is essential to assess dietary intake before prescribing supplements and to raise awareness among patients about their importance. [Extracted from the article]
Abstract (Spanish): Introducción: los requerimientos de calcio y vitamina D en mujeres posmenopáusicas son de 1000-1200 mg/día de calcio y 800-1200 UI/día de vitamina D, preferiblemente a través de la dieta. Los suplementos se indican cuando la ingesta dietética no cubre sus necesidades. Objetivo: evaluar la ingesta de calcio en mujeres posmenopáusicas que toman suplementos de calcio, determinando si su prescripción es adecuada. Material y métodos: estudio observacional, descriptivo y transversal en mujeres de 50 o más años que toman suplementos de calcio, excluyendo aquellas que llevan más de 6 meses sin recogerlos. Mediante encuestas se evaluó la ingesta de calcio utilizando la tabla de alimentos de Cosman, centrándose en el consumo de lácteos. Se realiza una descripción uni-y bivariada. Los intervalos de confianza se calculan al 95 % y los contrastes se aceptan cuando la probabilidad del error alfa es inferior al 5 % (valor p < 0,05). Resultados y conclusiones: de una muestra de 616 mujeres participan 357. El consumo medio de calcio ingerido a través de la dieta en las mujeres posmenopáusicas ha sido de 872 mg/día. Un 27 % toman suplementos de forma innecesaria, ya que su dieta cubre las necesidades de calcio. Se ha puesto en evidencia una baja adherencia a los suplementos. Alrededor de la mitad de las mujeres no toman o no siguen el tratamiento correctamente. Es fundamental evaluar la ingesta dietética antes de prescribir suplementos y concienciar a las pacientes sobre los beneficios del tratamiento y los riesgos de un mal seguimiento.
