Abstract (English): Background: Activated charcoal (AC) is a natural, orally administered compound with a high adsorptive capacity. Activated charcoal is the first-line gastrointestinal (GI) decontaminant agent in the therapy of acutely poisoned patients. Development: AC is neither absorbed nor metabolized, it passes through the gastrointestinal tract until it is eliminated in the feces, which it stains black. The greatest benefit of administration is obtained if it is used within the first hour after ingestion of the toxicant, its use is useful as long as it is a substance that can be adsorbed by the AC. Conclusion: Activated charcoal is often used as the single most effective gastrointestinal decontamination measure in emergency departments. However, there is a need for standardization and protocolization regarding the use of activated charcoal in cases of poisoning that reach the emergency services. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Abstract (Spanish): Antecedentes: el carbón activado (CA) es un compuesto natural, administrado por vía oral, con una gran capacidad absorbente. El carbón activado es el agente descontaminante gastrointestinal (GI) de primera línea en la terapia de pacientes con intoxicación aguda. Desarrollo: el CA no puede ser absorbido ni metabolizado, pasa a traves del tracto gastrointestinal hasta ser eliminado por las heces, mismas a las que tiñe de negro. Tiene un mayor beneficio si se utiliza dentro de la primera hora tras la ingesta del tóxico, su utilización es útil siempre que se trate de cualquier sustancia que pueda ser absorbida por el CA. Conclusión: el carbón activado se suele utilizar como única y más efectiva medida de descontaminación gastrointestinal en los servicios de emergencias y urgencias. Sin embargo, se precisa, una estandarización y protocolización respecto al uso de carbón activado en los casos de intoxicaciones que llegan a los servicios de emergencias. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
