Background: Mental health disorders in medical residents are a growing issue, requiring awareness, prevention, and treatment. Objective: To analyze the effect of mental health tools on medical residents’ knowledge of self-care and coping strategies. Material and methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted among Obstetrics and Gynecology residents. Questionnaires on Knowledge of self-care and coping strategies, suicide prevention, alcohol use, and the Alcohol Use Disorders Test (AUDIT) were administered. The Field Test Version: mhGAP Community Toolkit: Mental Health Gap Action Programme was administered in 6 sessions, and a preand post-intervention assessment and a perception survey were also performed. Results: 30 residents, 90% women, were included. In the post-intervention evaluation, the overall score on the Knowledge questionnaire increased: 84.61 (69.23-92.3) vs. 92.3 (82.68-94.22) (p = 0.002), mostly in the areas of relaxation techniques and life skills, lifestyle, and self-care, but not in alcohol prevention. Conclusions: This study showed a beneficial effect on the acquisition and maintenance of knowledge on self-care and coping strategies among medical residents using mental health tools. Introducción: los trastornos de salud mental en médicos residentes son un problema creciente, por lo que se requiere de sensibilización, prevención y tratamiento. Objetivo: analizar el efecto en el conocimiento adquirido por médicos residentes mediante herramientas de salud mental sobre estrategias de autocuidado y afrontamiento. Material y métodos: estudio cuasiexperimental, en médicos residentes de Ginecología y Obstetricia. Se aplicó el Cuestionario de conocimientos sobre estrategias de autocuidado, afrontamiento, prevención del suicidio y consumo de alcohol y el cuestionario de Alcohol Use Disorders Test (AUDIT). Se aplicaron las Herramientas del Programa Mundial para Superar las Brechas de Salud Mental (mhGAP) para usar en la comunidad: versión de prueba sobre el terreno en 6 sesiones, así como una evaluación pre- y postintervención y la encuesta de percepción. Resultados: participaron 30 residentes, 90% mujeres. En la evaluación post-intervención incrementó el puntaje general del Cuestionario de conocimientos: 84.61 (69.23-92.3) frente a 92.3 (82.68-94.22), (p = 0.002), sobre todo en las dimensiones de técnicas de relajación y competencias para la vida, estilo de vida y autocuidado, pero no en prevención de consumo de alcohol. Conclusiones: este estudio mostró un efecto benéfico en la adquisición y mantenimiento de conocimientos de las estrategias de autocuidado y afrontamiento en los médicos residentes con herramientas sobre salud mental.
