Abstract (English): ANTECEDENTS: Handwashing with soap and water is a simple hygiene measure, but with a strong impact on the prevention of sometimes fatal infectious diseases. OBJECTIVE: In line with October 15, "Global Handwashing Day," this study was conducted to determine the percentage of the population in the world's regions and countries that have access to handwashing facilities. METHOD: Using an observational-descriptive design and the World Health Organization's "Percentage of population using hand hygiene facilities with soap and water" dataset, the percentage of the population by region and country that had access to soap and water for handwashing in 2022 was analyzed. Comparisons were made between urban and rural areas, and the historical evolution of access to this hygiene measure was analyzed from 2000 to 2022. RESULTS: The countries included in the dataset corresponding to the European and African regions had the highest and lowest percentages, respectively, of access to this service. Except for Europe, rural areas had less access to handwashing than urban areas. In recent years, Oceania, Asia, and Africa have increased their population access to this service, particularly in rural areas. The percentage has decreased slightly in Europe and sharply in the Americas. DISCUSSION: The importance of access to handwashing and the barriers to overcome are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Abstract (Spanish): ANTECEDENTES: El lavado de manos con agua y jabón es una medida de higiene sencilla, pero con un fuerte impacto para la prevención de enfermedades infecciosas en ocasiones mortales. OBJETIVO: En sintonía con el 15 de octubre "Día Mundial del Lavado de Manos" se realizó este estudio cuyo objetivo fue conocer el porcentaje de población en las regiones del mundo y sus países que tienen acceso al lavado de manos. MÉTODO: Mediante un diseño observacional-descriptivo y empleando el conjunto de datos "Porcentaje de población que usa instalaciones para la higiene de manos con agua y jabón" de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, se analizó el porcentaje de la población por región y país que en 2022 contaban con acceso a agua y jabón para el lavado de manos. Se realizaron comparaciones entre áreas urbana y rural y se analizó la evolución histórica del acceso a esta medida de higiene del año 2000 a 2022. RESULTADOS: Los países incluidos en el conjunto de datos correspondientes a la región de Europa y África tuvieron el mayor y menor porcentaje, respectivamente, de acceso a este servicio. Salvo por Europa, las áreas rurales tuvieron menor acceso al lavado de mano frente a las urbanas. En los últimos años, Oceanía, Asia y África han aumentado el porcentaje de acceso a este servicio en su población, particularmente en áreas rurales.
