| Abstract (English): |
Introduction. The elimination of microorganisms within root canals is crucial for the success of endodontic treatment. Sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is currently the most widely used irrigant in root canal therapy due to its high antimicrobial capacity; however, other irrigants alternative with the same antimicrobial effectiveness have been sought. Objective. To investigate the effectiveness of NaOCl compared to other irrigants used in endodontics by searching for scientific information and to learn about other types of irrigants used in endodontics. Methodology. A systematic review was conducted under the guidelines of the PRISMA protocol, as well as the GRADE scale to determine the methodological quality of the articles. Information was collected from seven in vitro studies in three databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar, considering articles published between 2019 to 2024. Results. A total of 406 articles were obtained from the database search. With the help of filters, 127 articles were selected, 43 of which were related to in vitro studies, of which 36 were examined and excluded because they did not meet the eligibility criteria. In total, seven articles that satisfactorily met the inclusion criteria were included. Conclusions. Based on the data extracted from the different in vitro studies, it is concluded that NaOCl is the irrigant with the best antimicrobial efficacy in infected root canals. Although its efficacy is recognized, caution is advised regarding its cytotoxicity at high concentrations or prolonged exposures. Compared to other agents, NaOCl is equally effective in disinfecting canals, but the choice of irrigant must take into account its specific properties and patient safe ty. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
