| Abstract (English): |
Introduction: Vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) is one of the preferred techniques for the treatment of morbid obesity. However, routine histopathological examination of the specimen remains debated. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of preoperative endoscopic and postoperative pathological findings in patients who underwent VSG. Methods: Retrospective and analytical. Patients who underwent VSG between 2014 and 2025 were included. Sex, age, body mass index (BMI), endoscopic and histopathologic findings were assessed. Results: 360 cases met the inclusion criteria. Preoperative endoscopy was available in 215 (56.6%). Prevalence of non atrophic cronic gastritis was 38.8% and of pre-neoplastic lesions such as intestinal metaplasia was 0.5% and no tumors were identified. Conclusions: The results suggest that routine histopathological examination of VSG specimens may still be justified. Alternatively, a selective approach could apply for those cases in which opening the fresh specimen reveals suspicious or abnormal mucosa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |

[ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
