Abstract (English): We analyze the origin and historical evolution of the Veress needle to establish its significance as a safety cornerstone in modern laparoscopic surgery. This chronicle traces the device from its original invention to its surgical repurposing. Veress needle was invented in 1938 by Dr. János Veres for a now-obsolete purpose: the induction of therapeutic pneumothorax for pulmonary tuberculosis. Its design –a spring-loaded, blunt inner stylet mechanism– was conceived as a protective shield for blind access to the chest cavity. Decades later, surgical pioneers repurposed this device for abdominal access, solving the critical challenge of safely creating pneumoperitoneum. The Veress needle is a symbol of ingenuity that transcends its era. Its history underscores that safety is the spring that drives and guards the technical responsibility of the surgeon during the most delicate act of minimally invasive surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Abstract (Spanish): Analizamos el origen y la evolución histórica de la Aguja de Veress para establecer su significado como pilar de seguridad en la cirugía laparoscópica moderna. Se presenta una crónica histórica que rastrea el dispositivo desde su origen hasta su recontextualización quirúrgica. La aguja de Veress fue inventada en 1938 por el Dr. János Veres con un propósito terapéutico olvidado: la inducción de neumotórax para el tratamiento de la tuberculosis pulmonar. Su diseño –un mecanismo de doble punta con un estilete interno romo y cargado por resorte– fue concebido como un escudo protector en el acceso a ciegas al tórax. Décadas después, cirujanos pioneros redescubrieron este ingenio mecánico y lo adoptaron para el acceso abdominal, resolviendo el desafío más crítico de la laparoscopía: la creación segura del neumoperitoneo. La aguja de Veress es un símbolo de ingenio que trasciende su era.
