| Abstract (English): | Brivaracetam, a third-generation antiepileptic drug, has garnered increasing interest as a potential therapeutic alternative for the treatment of neuropathic pain. Unlike its precursor, levetiracetam, it exhibits markedly higher affinity for synaptic vesicle protein 2A and also acts on ion channels involved in neuronal hyperexcitability. Although its approved indication is currently limited to seizure control, various preclinical studies and preliminary clinical observations suggest an analgesic potential that remains insufficiently explored. This narrative review examines the underlying mechanisms of action, summarizes findings from both animal and human models, and contextualizes the emerging role of brivaracetam as a pharmacological candidate in the management of neuropathic pain. The still preliminary evidence underscores the need for specific clinical trials to confirm its efficacy and safety profile in this novel therapeutic domain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
| Abstract (Spanish): | Brivaracetam, un antiepiléptico de tercera generación, ha despertado un creciente interés como posible alternativa terapéutica en el tratamiento del dolor neuropático. A diferencia de su precursor, levetiracetam, posee una afinidad marcadamente superior por la proteína vesicular sináptica 2A y actúa además sobre canales iónicos relacionados con la hiperexcitabilidad neuronal. Aunque su uso aprobado se limita actualmente al control de crisis epilépticas, diversos estudios preclínicos y observaciones clínicas preliminares apuntan a un potencial efecto analgésico aún insuficientemente explorado. Esta revisión narrativa examina los mecanismos de acción implicados, resume los hallazgos obtenidos en modelos animales y humanos, y contextualiza el papel emergente de brivaracetam como candidato farmacológico en el abordaje del dolor neuropático. La evidencia, todavía incipiente, subraya la necesidad de ensayos clínicos específicos que confirmen su eficacia y perfil de seguridad en este nuevo campo terapéutico. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR] |
