| Abstract (English): |
Pediatric burns are a significant cause of accidental morbidity and mortality, with the highest incidence in chil- dren under 2 years old and a predominance of scalds from hot liquids. Injuries involving more than 15.0-20.0% of the total body surface area trigger a systemic response characterized by hypovolemia, shock, a hypermetabolic state, and the risk of respiratory, renal, and metabolic complications. The anatomy and physiology of children-- including thinner skin, narrower airways, and reliance on tachycardia to maintain cardiac output--increase vulnerability and accelerate deterioration. Clinical evaluation should consider depth, extent, etiology, location, and context, and timely, protocolized initial management is essential to improve survival and minimize long-term functional, aesthetic, and metabolic sequelae. Las quemaduras pediátricas constituyen una causa importante de morbimortalidad accidental, con mayor incidencia en niños menores de 2 años y predominio de escaldaduras por líquidos calientes. Las lesiones que comprometen más del 15,0-20,0% de la superficie corporal total desencadenan una respuesta sistémica caracterizada por hipovolemia, choque, estado hipermetabólico y riesgo de complicaciones respiratorias, renales y metabólicas. La anatomía y fisiología infantil--piel más delgada, vía aérea estrecha y dependencia de taquicardia para mantener gasto cardíaco--aumentan la vulnerabilidad y aceleran el deterioro. La evaluación clínica debe considerar profundidad, extensión, etiología, localización y contexto, y un manejo inicial oportuno y protocolizado es fundamental para mejorar la supervivencia y minimizar secuelas funcionales, estéticas y metabólicas a largo plazo.
